Blood Sorcery

Changes to Rules-As-Written

The rules as written for blood sorcery leave a lot to be desired for 2e. Overall, the version in the core rulebook leaves it feeling muted and underpowered in relation to the other powers and abilities of the other covenants. Thus, the team put together a way to keep the 2e system and expand it with some approved content additions and custom content expansions that enhance the system rather than replace it.

What follows is how we have decided to expand upon the system. Theban and Cruac will now have access to a merit called “Ritual Mastery” which allows them to cast Advanced optional improvements to each of the blood sorcery written below.

Approved Content

In addition to the content in our Approved Books List on the VtR Character Creation page, we are approving the following content for use.

Approved from Desecrated Rites:

  • Merit: Coven (• to •••; Style), no Ritual Factor Rules. [DR 14]
  • Merit: Personal Style (•) [DR 16]
  • Merit: Predatory Magic (••) [DR 16]

Custom Content

The following section is custom content the Venue Team wrote up for Eternal Noire 3.0. More custom content that is player-submitted can be found in our Player’s Guide.

New Merits:

The following section is custom content the Venue Team wrote up for Eternal Noire 3.0.

Ritual Mastery (•••••)

Ritual Mastery (•••••)

Prerequisites: Theban or Cruac •••+, Specialty in Theban or Cruac

Description: You understand the nature of Kindred magic in a way few ever do or take the care to learn. You are able to cast your spells in ways most can not. Not only that you can subtly make changes to the spells you cast to suit your needs better. Most importantly you have the ability to formalize new alterations as new spells for less adept sorcerers.

Effect: Spells that already exist will come with ‘Advanced’ casting options that you may take advantage of if you possess the Ritual Mastery merit. In addition, you may attempt to make new ‘Advanced’ casting options. Finally, you may formalize such changes to existing rituals as a new ritual that you can teach to those without the Ritual Mastery merit to cast.

Kitchen Witch (••)

Kitchen Witch (••)

Prerequisites: Cruac ••+

Description: Be it for agility or a lack of funds, you are versatile with your craft, being able to use items from your environment to help cast rituals – well-used wooden spoons, a herb collected under moonlight or more esoteric items.

Effect: You can use an item from your surroundings to reduce the vitae cost of casting a spell by a number of Vitae by one (but never less than one).

Witch’s Familiar (• to ••)

Witch’s Familiar (• to ••)

Prerequisites: Cruac •+, Ghoul Retainer •+

Description: Your “familiar” has been with you through everything. Whether it’s a former pet or a new friend, its devotion to you and your attachment to them is stronger and they keep you grounded in your attachment to your humanity even when using blood sorcery.

Effect: Your familiar counts as an additional touchstone for purposes of detachment rolls. Instead of a +3 die bonus for multiple touchstones (See VtR 2e 108), increase the bonus by dots in this merit, not to exceed 5.

Drawback: If your item is destroyed, it also counts as losing a touchstone following the same process to replace it. This merit is subject to Sanctity of Merits should the item be destroyed.

Unholy Relic (• to ••)

Unholy Relic (• to ••)

Prerequisites: Theban •+, Touchstone •+

Description: You are quite attached to an item you received in life, or from someone important to you, and have kept it with you so often while performing Theban that it has developed a mysterious connection to your blood sorcery.

Effect: This item counts as an additional touchstone for purposes of detachment rolls.

Cruac

If there isn’t an Advanced Casting listed below that fits what you’re looking for please submit all new ideas for custom content to your vampire team. We will review it and add it to the list if approved.

Level One

Mantle of Amorous Fire

Advanced Casting – The ritualist may include another in the casting of this ritual affecting both. Increase the required successes to 7.

Pangs of Proserpina

Advanced Casting – The spell requires you to make a small altar and requires 12 successes to its range to be increased to 20 miles.

Pool of Forbidden Truths

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Rigor Mortis

Advanced Casting – The spell requires Cruac 2 and one additional Vitae. The spell roll takes one Instant Action per roll.

Level Two

Cheval

Advanced Casting – The ritualist prepares a cursed object instead of targeting a specific individual. They may see and hear through the object instead. This option may be used in conjunction with other Advanced Castings of Cheval.

Advanced Casting – By placing their personal mark on the subject of the spell they can increase the spell duration to a lunar month. Increase the required successes to 10.

Mantle of the Beast’s Breath

Advanced Casting – The ritualist may include another in the casting of this ritual affecting both. Increase the required successes to 7.

Hydra’s Vitae

Advanced Casting – The ritualist can prepare a potion and have anyone that drinks it come under the effects of this ritual.

Shed the Virulent Bowels

Advanced Casting –  Requires Cruac 3. The ritual’s cast time is reduced to one turn per roll. If successfully cast, the ritual takes effect immediately dealing one Lethal damage per turn but only so long as the ritualist can continue in direct line of sight with the target. Increase the required successes to 8.

Level Three

Curse of Aphrodite’s Favor

Advanced Casting – The first and second drink cause the Swooning Condition if the victim fails their resistance roll. Increase the required successes to 9.

Curse of the Beloved Toy

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Deflection of Wooden Doom

Advanced Casting – The ritualist girds their heart in the goddess’ fiery mantle. By subjecting themselves to the pain of fire when casting the spell the ritual retaliates against those that attempt to stake them. Roll Presence + Occult + Cruac – Defense. If successful the spell inflicts the On Fire tilt against offenders. Increase the required successes to 9.

Donning the Beast’s Flesh

Advanced Casting – Normally the enchanted item loses its power once the vampire returns to their normal shape. Powerful ritualists can include a way for anyone to refresh the object to be used again. Whatever method is determined it always requires at least half an hour of work and one Vitae. Increase the required successes to 10.

Mantle of the Glorious Dervish

Advanced Casting – The ritualist may include another in the casting of this ritual affecting both. Increase the required successes to 7.

Touch of the Morrigan

Advanced Casting – The ritualist marks their hands with signs of predatory birds. So long as these marks persist the spell will endure or until its third night whichever comes first. In addition the ritualist may make a clawing motion at their intended target and so long as they are within 20 yards they make a Pres + Animal Ken roll -Defense. On a success attack the spell deals its Potency in lethal wounds and the ritual ends. Increase the required successes to 10.

Level Four

Blood Blight

Advanced Casting – The ritualist inflicts the moderate Sick tilt on the target of the ritual if successful which lasts for one night as their blood is contaminated by the Crone’s curse. Kindred can spend two Vitae to end the Tilt early if they wish to sick up the tainted blood.

Blood Price

Advanced Casting – The ritualist steals every other Vitae the victim imbibes until the next moon phase (typically up to five nights). Increases required successes to 11.

Bounty of the Storm

Advanced Casting – The ritualist can invoke another curse instead. The victim of this curse spreads bad luck and misfortune to all those around them. Minor inconveniences and maladies plague those that spend time with the victim of this ritual and they know on some level that it’s their fault. Increase all doors by one for the victim and apply a -2 penalty on most social rolls. It’s not all bad however, once per scene the luck works in their favor. Maybe a guard gets a cramp and looks away or some sliver distracts an assailant. The ST applies a -2 penalty against someone else in the scene on behalf of this ritual victim when requested.

Feeding the Crone

Advanced Casting –  The ritualist may bless another with this ritual. Increase the required successes to 12

Gorgon’s Gaze

Advanced Casting –  The ritualist tempers the magic only affecting one eye with its magic taking the Blind (One Eye) instead of complete blindness. However, treat the victim’s Stamina as being two higher when they resist this spell.

Manananggal’s Working

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Mantle of the Predator Goddess

Advanced Casting –  The ritualist tempers the ritual lessing it’s power in order to extend it’s length. Though still a glorious predator she doesn’t take center stage. The ritual will last until the next gibbous moon’s apex. During this time add half her Cruac dots, rounded up, to feeding rolls. In addition her maximum rating in Herd becomes ten. She may perform this ritual each month to keep any dots above her normal maximum. If she fails to do so Sanctity of Merits applies.

Quicken the Withered Womb

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Willful Vitae

Advanced Casting –  The ritualist temporarily severs a full blood bond in herself or another in addition to making them immune Vinculum and Vitae Addiction. The severed bond isn’t so easily ignored however, haunting and hampering its victim in other ways. The storyteller may apply a penalty on up to three rolls per scene equal to the Regnant’s Blood Potency. Increased the required successes to 11.

Level Five

Birthing the God

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Denying Hades

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Gwydion’s Curse

Advanced Casting –  The witch may infuse the plants with a portion of her spirit rendering them particularly vicious and bloodthirsty not to mention aware. She may invest the ritual with dots of her own Blood Potency which she loses while the ritual lasts. As a result the ritualist gains several major advantages. The plants will never attack the ritualist or those she marks with a special sigil of her own Vitae. The plant’s dice pools for attacking become the ritualists original Blood Potency + her sacrificed Blood Potency. If at least two Blood Potency was sacrificed their Durability is increased to 3 and finally if attacking Vampires they steal their spilled Vitae for their own ends.

Mantle of the Crone

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Scapegoat

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Theban

If there isn’t an Advanced Casting listed below that fits what you’re looking for please submit all new ideas for custom content to your vampire team. We will review it and add it to the list if approved.

Level One

Apple of Eden

Advanced Casting – Requires Theban 3. The enchanted fruit can benefit anyone, not only mortals. For Kindred it functions much like it does for mortals but for other creatures such as werewolves with Harmony its effects can be unpredictable. (Determined by the ST)

Blandishment of Sin

Advanced Casting – The spell requires Theban 2. The spell roll takes one Instant Action per roll.

Blood Scourge

Advanced Casting –  The priest writes a sigil or script on the subject of the Miracle. So long as the sigil remains intact the ritual will last. During this time reduce their Maximum Vitae by one as it has been enchanted by this spell. At any point the subject may call for the power of this miracle which lasts until the end of the scene before turning to dust and ending the spell. Increase the required number of successes to 9.

Marian Apparition

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Revelatory Shroud

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Vitae Reliquary

Advanced Casting –  The priest enchants the vessel so the magic lasts indefinitely. Accessing the Vitae requires a short prayer or ritual which takes at least three turns. In addition the vessel can only hold up to its Size times three Vitae. Increase the required number of successes to 8.

Level Two

Apparitions of the Host

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Blood Icon

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Curse of Babel

Advanced Casting – The curse becomes more precise. A specific subject can be made taboo to the victim. If they attempt to speak or write about it the ritual punishes them by burning or cutting their tongue or crippling their hand. They take one Lethal damage each time they attempt to do so and are unable to actually do so. When used this way the curse lasts until one month has passed or the subject spends a number of Willpower equal to the Priests dots in Theban which no more than one can be spent in a night. Increase the required successes to 10.

Liar’s Plague

Advanced Casting – The curse becomes more lasting. For each above 5 Potency the ritual will last an additional hour. If the ritualist reaches Potency 10 it lasts until the next dawn and should the ritualist reach Potency 15 it lasts for one week.

The Walls of Jericho

Advanced Casting – The ritualist may improve the miracle in one of three ways; they can ignore requiring the target’s name, the target being a vampire or increase the horn’s duration to one month. Only one of these may be selected. Increased the required number of successes to 10.

Level Three

Aaron’s Rod

Advanced Casting – The serpent is a particularly vicious one gaining a number of dots in Physical Disciplines equal to its creators’ dots in Theban. It’s creator must actually possess these disciplines at the desired rating. Increased the required number of successes by 2 per discipline dot bestowed. The serpent uses it’s willpower instead of Vitae to activate these disciplines.

While the Rod persists, lower the priest’s maximum Willpower by one. The priest may reclaim this willpower at any time by spending an Instant Action which results in the rod or staff disintegrating into white ash.

Baptism of Damnation

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Blessing the Legion

Advanced Casting – The ritualist improves the miracle’s duration extending to last one month or until the last Vitae is spent. Increase the required number of successes to 12. Each additional 3 successes allows an additional armor to be blessed.

The Guiding Star

Advanced Casting – The ritualist modifies the miracle so they can track anyone holding one of the coins enchanted for the ritual in addition to the normal effects of the spell. So long as they are inside the location enchanted by the spell the ritualist knows the approximate direction and distance of each of the coins and if they are in someone’s possession. Increase the required number of successes to 10.

Malediction of Despair

Advanced Casting – The ritualist enhances the ritual allowing them to know whenever it is triggered and a brief vision of the situation in which it occurred. In addition they may spend a point of Willpower to reset the ritual allowing it to afflict the individual again. The Advanced Casting of the ritual in this fashion shortens it’s lifespan however reducing it to one week regardless of how many times it’s reset. Increase the required number of successes to 15.

Miracle of the Dead Sun

Advanced Casting – The ritualist tempers the miracle. The Kindred coughs up inky black smoke that engulf a small area equal to a football field. The darkness last for one minute for each dot of the vampire’s current Humanity. The darkness is thick enough to apply a -3 penalty on rolls that rely on vision, such as most attacks and halves the defense of those inside. Increase the required number of successes to 12..

Pledge to the Worthless One

Advanced Casting – As the spell does not exist there is no way to use Advanced Castings. (Many Theban Sorcerers who have learned of this miracle wonder who is the Worthless One and if perhaps the principles of the miracle could be used to instead contact other entities who might provide other benefits)

The Rite of Ascending Blood

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Level Four

Blandishment of Sin

Advanced Casting – By spending an additional Willpower the spell roll becomes an Instant Action.

Curse of Isolation

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Gift of Lazarus

Advanced Casting – A rare and sometimes heretical casting of the miracle returns the dead to life. The subject of the spell, which must be a mortal, must have died as a result of supernatural intervention for this spell to have any chance of success. If successful the mortal returns to life but changes in some way. The nature of the change is difficult to predict but frequently is related to the nature of their death. The Kindred may spend Vitae to restore missing limbs or other damage if they wish as if they were Kindred since the spell will only heal the actual cause of death and no peripheral damage. Increase the number of required successes by 1 for each hour since the target’s death. In addition to the normal Sacrament the ritualist must sacrifice their connection to one of their own Touchstones.

Great Prophecy

Advanced Casting – Instead of a grand sweeping prophecy the priest searches the near future for answers. The Advanced Casting follows the normal rules of the ritual except that the rolls are Instant Actions during which the priest uses some form of divinatory tools such as throwing bones. Once complete the priest announces some action or thing that must not come to pass in the scene, for example ‘The Primogen Council and Prince must not allow this criminal to meet Final Death this night’. If the Prophecy is ignored those that trespass suffer a curse. They lose access to all dice modifiers such as 10-again and Rote and suffer -2 to all resisted and contested rolls for the next week. Increase the required number of successes to 10. The required Sacrement becomes the actual tool of Divination used instead of a body part of a saint.

Stigmata

Advanced Casting – By spending an additional Willpower the spell roll becomes an Instant Action. Increase the required number of successes to 8.

Trials of Job

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Level Five

Apocalypse

Advanced Casting – The ritualist curses those in the immediate area illuminated with the spell’s effect revealing their unnatural nature and making supernatural attempts to hide or conceal it fail automatically. The ritual’s effects last for a week. The spell rolls become an Instant Action. Increased the required successes to 12.

The Judgement Fast

Advanced Casting – The ritualist allows for some alleviations of the curse. The exact nature varies but a common one is those that attend a Midnight Mass find the effects of the curse suspended for the night. Increase the required successes to 20.

Orison of Voices

Advanced Casting – If an additional Willpower is spent during the casting of the ritual it becomes empowered. Whenever someone calls out to her she may provide mercy or curses to them. If she chooses to provide mercy she may bless them with Vitae from her own stores. For every two Vitae the ritualist spends, the recipient receives one Vitae with no chance of Vitae Addiction or Vinculum.

If she chooses to curse the recipient they spend one point of Willpower and roll PRES + Expression + Theban vs COMP + RES. If successful the subject rolls twice on their next five rolls taking the worse result.

Sins of the Ancestors

Advanced Casting – None currently. Player-submitted ideas are welcome.

Transubstantiation

Advanced Casting – By spending an additional Willpower the spell roll becomes an Instant Action. Increase the required number of successes to 10.
